How NFC Technology Works (Simple Explainer)

You tap a card to a phone and a profile appears. It feels like magic, but understanding how NFC works is actually quite simple. NFC stands for Near Field Communication, and it is the same family of technology behind tap-to-pay cards and travel passes.

The basic idea

Inside an NFC card or tag is a tiny chip and a thin coil of wire called an antenna. The chip holds a small piece of information, usually a link. Here is the clever part. The chip has no battery. When you bring it close to a phone, the phone's own NFC reader gives off a small radio field, and that field powers the chip just enough to send its data across.

Because it only works over a very short distance, typically a few centimetres, you have to tap or hold the card right against the phone. That short range is a feature, not a flaw. It means the exchange only happens when you clearly intend it to, which keeps things secure and deliberate.

What happens on a tap

When you tap a TapAll product, the chip passes a link to the phone. The phone opens that link in its browser, and up comes your profile, your menu, or your review page. The person tapping does not need any app, because reading NFC and opening a web link are things modern phones already do on their own. For older phones or anyone who prefers it, a QR code offers the same result by scanning.

Why the link approach is smart

The chip does not store your whole profile, only a pointer to it online. That is why your details stay editable. You change your information on the web, the link stays the same, and the next tap shows the updated page. Nothing needs to be reprogrammed on the card itself.

So when you strip away the mystery, NFC is just a chip, an antenna, and a short burst of energy from a nearby phone. Simple, reliable, and quietly clever. That is how a single tap can share so much.
